Anthropologist Robin Dunbar found that humans can only maintain about 150 meaningful relationships. Inside that? 15 close friends, 5 confidants, 1-2 you’d call at 3am.
We’re told more is better. But your brain was built for depth, not breadth.
The handful of people you’d actually grab coffee with? That’s your real circle. ☕️

Our worst misfortunes never happen, and most miseries lie in anticipation. – Honoré de Balzac 📚
Never discount the courage it takes to go after your dreams, to do the difficult task, or to make a change in your life. To go from “deciding” to “decided” holds immense power. Relish in it. Expect more.

The Movement Snacking Theory🚶🏼♀️
Fitness culture told us movement only counts if it’s 60 minutes, high intensity, and tracked. But the latest wellness research says short bursts of movement, ‘movement snacking’, might actually be better for you than one long gym session.
5 minutes here. 10 minutes there. A walk to grab coffee. Stairs instead of the elevator. A lap around the block.
These micro-movements keep your metabolism active, support joint health, and counter hours of sitting.
Your body doesn’t distinguish between ‘exercise’ and ‘movement.’ It just knows you’re not sitting still.
So that 10-minute walk to Balzac’s? That’s not procrastination. That’s your movement snack.
You don’t need to optimize everything. Sometimes the walk matters more than the workout.

Balzac’s Neighbourhood Grounds ☕️ an ongoing look at the neighbourhoods we’re lucky enough to be part of. First up, the one with cobblestones and good light: The Distillery District.
Historic Victorian-era brick buildings, some of the best local shops, and restaurants the city has to offer, here’s what we love in the neighbourhood:
🛍️ Blackbird Vintage Finds — Toronto vintage shopping at its best
🧥 Hoi Bo — independent Canadian fashion worth seeking out
🎨 Bergo Designs — unique art and design objects (Jellycat lovers rejoice)
🌮 El Catrin — some of the best Mexican food and margaritas in Toronto (all served on one of the best patios)
🧴 The Ordinary — clinical skincare at prices that actually make sense
👜 Queen’s Trunk — curated vintage clothing in the heart of the district
🖼️ Thompson Landry Gallery — contemporary art in a stunning heritage space
🦪 Pure Spirits Oyster House — fresh oysters and a killer patio
We’ve been serving you coffee in this neighbourhood for 24 years. These are the neighbours that we have met along the way.

Why do we all feel the urge to reinvent ourselves in spring? 🌱
Spring cleaning. Healthier lifestyle choices. Wardrobe refresh. Relationship evaluation. Fresh start energy hits in April like clockwork.
Here’s why: Spring is when growth becomes visible. After months of grey, everything around you is suddenly blooming, changing, coming alive. And when you see transformation everywhere else, you may start wondering: where’s mine?
But here’s the thing: those flowers didn’t just decide to grow yesterday. Coffee plants spend 3-5 years building roots before they bloom. All that growth was happening underground, invisible to everyone else.
So if spring makes you feel behind, remember: you’re not behind. You’re just comparing your roots to everyone else’s blooms.
Different timelines. Same growth. ☕
Happy Easter from Balzac’s.

Before the cafés, before the roastery, before the lineup you’re currently standing in, there was a coffee cart at Ontario Place and a genuine belief that Canadians deserved better coffee.
