Sabai Sabai has always been about Family. Loved ones coming together over recipes shared across generations and conversations picking up where they left off. It was founded in an attempt to recreate childhood memories in Laos and Thailand at dinner tables surrounded by hungry, reaching hands and familiar spirits. It was built by two families coming together — one in Jason and Seng, the other in Nuit and Jeff — with a unified dream and vision. Then, it became so much more.
Which is why we are sad to announce that Sabai Sabai is closing after 10 years. Our home has been expropriated by the city of Toronto for the upcoming TTC expansion project. The last service will be on Saturday July 23rd, 2022.
Looking back upon those years, we are reminded of the friends who helped paint its walls and build its furniture. We are reminded of the many cooks, waiters, and cleaners who turned it into a home. And we are reminded of our fondest memories whenever Sabai indulged in its celebrations and community — New Year’s Eve, Pride Month, Songkran.
Our Family grew with each of you who dined within our walls, discovered our recipes and shared our conversation. Our dream didn’t become real until you met us at our table, hungry and familiar. And whether you met us on Dundas or Bloor or followed us across Toronto — Thank you. We hope we’ve left you with memories that rival our own.
Because Sabai Sabai will be missed, but this Family isn’t going anywhere. Whatever the next chapter holds, Sabai Sabai’s spirit will live on — in peace and in love and with lots and lots of sticky rice.🙏🏽❤️
