How it started/How it is...

As many of you know, earlier this year James and I made the decision to find new caretakers for Might & Main.

With a mix of happiness, nostalgia, and deep gratitude to each and every one of you, we're ready to say goodbye to this incredible place we’ve shared and step into a new adventure.

If you know us, you know this is James’ third (and last) spot, and we’re ready for any adventure that doesn’t involve owning a coffee shop!

With that said, we are so excited for you to meet the new owners in the coming week. They're long-time eastenders who we’ve known as long as we’ve known you!

Allow us to introduce Lori & William, a mom / son duo who we know will take beautiful care of this space, the community and that they’ll continue to grow & build on what we’ve started together. They'll introduce themselves here in the coming week or two.

We hope you’ll give them the same warm welcome, kindness & care you’ve shown us, and be patient as they get to know your usuals.

And we know a lot of you were worried, but the breakfast sandwiches aren’t going anywhere, they’ve promised! William is already an ace in the kitchen, so we doubt you'll even notice a difference.

If you see new faces behind the counter, say hello! James and I will be in the shop as usual until the end of the month.

After that, we’re not far, and looking forward to seeing you from the other side of the counter!

A LONG READ ABOUT CEBA LOANS:
I thought I would share what's happening with those pandemic loans, and how they're impacting small businesses right now.

Lots of us received CRA backed loans in 2020, when lockdowns had just gotten started, and it was life-saving for lots of us.

The terms of repayment gave us until 31 December 2022 to repay our loans in order to receive forgiveness of a portion of the loan. So, if we were given $60,000 and we repaid $40,000 by the deadline, we can forget the other $20,000.

If we don't meet this deadline, the interest rate on our loan is 5% plus prime, and we need to repay $60,000, not $40,000.

The deadline for repayment was pushed to 31 December 2023 in mid-2022.

CFIB (Canadian Federation of Independent Business) is a lobby group who, along with Canada Retailers, Restaurants Canada and others, are lobbying hard for an extension to the repayment deadline of 2025, and additional forgiveness, especially for businesses who were subject to the harshest lockdowns (think salons & barbers, restaurants, bars & cafes, gyms & yoga studios).

It is estimated that 70% of small businesses in Canada are not able to repay these loans under the current terms, have not yet returned to pre-pandemic revenue levels, and are facing record high cost of goods.

Why am I telling you all of this? Local business owners could use your support.

I'm hoping that you're able to help us by calling or writing your local MP (in BEY that's Nathaniel Erskine-Smith) and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland on our behalf to request that they work with CFIB to extend terms and forgiveness of loans. I've pasted a template in the comments.

If you're able to send a paper letter, it makes a much bigger impact as they have to record and reply to it, but an email is great too!

Nate's office is 1902 Danforth Avenue, Toronto, M4C 1J4, 416-467-0860, [email protected]
Minister Freeland's office is 344 Bloor Street West, Suite 510, Toronto M5S 3A7, 416-928-1451, [email protected]
