For Verna and her husband, buko pie is more than dessert, it is heritage. Both from Laguna, the birthplace of the Filipino favorite, they carried the recipe and tradition with them when they moved to Canada. After years of working survival jobs, they started baking pies in their apartment in 2016. Orders spread through word of mouth, from fellow workers to subway meetups, until demand grew beyond what they imagined.
In 2019, they opened a small shop. The pandemic forced them to close just seven months later, but they refused to give up. With faith and determination, Verna’s Buko Pie has risen again, now enjoyed not only by Filipinos but by Canadians, Chinese, and many others. Each pie carries the taste of home, baked by hand, crust and filling made fresh, and always with the dream of expanding so more people can experience a true taste of Laguna in Toronto.
