TW: Racism, Slavery, Abuse, Violence, Sexual Assault.

From historical accounts of chattel slavery to modern social analysis, Black women have been subjected to a wide range of kinds of abuse, including labour, sexual, and medical exploitation.

Racism, patriarchy, and other oppressive institutions have produced dynamics that render Black women vulnerable to domestic abuse at alarming rates while leaving them unprotected by societal institutions.

Black women’s experiences with sexual violence are framed by a long history of objectification and exploitation of Black women’s bodies.

Law enforcement has always had a crucial role in subjecting Black women to abuse. For example, under slavery, the US legal system did not recognize r**e as a criminal offence against Black women since Black women were considered property and, as such, could have (or claim) no rights.

Reproductive oppression refers to the regulation and exploitation of individuals’ bodies, sexuality, labour, and procreative capacities as a strategy to control individuals and entire communities. Reproductive oppression against Black women is rooted in the US history of the commodification of Black women’s bodies, sexuality, and reproductive lives.
