Spice Opens Up About Jamaica’s Pain and Strength in Emotional CNN Interview After Hurricane Melissa

Dancehall icon Spice, celebrated worldwide as the “Queen of Dancehall,” appeared on CNN to speak about the destruction left behind by Hurricane Melissa and the major relief efforts she is leading through her Grace Hamilton Foundation.

The interview opened with the host introducing her as a Grammy-nominated artist with millions of followers and hundreds of millions of music streams. But the focus quickly shifted from her musical achievements to her heartfelt commitment to helping Jamaica recover.

Speaking from Miami, Spice—whose real name is Grace Hamilton—described the current reality in Jamaica for people who haven’t seen the damage firsthand. She recalled returning home after the storm and being brought to tears by the sight of fallen trees, destroyed landscapes, damaged light poles, and widespread power outages. Nearly half the island, she explained, is still without electricity.

What moved her the most was seeing the struggle of everyday Jamaicans. She said Jamaicans are proud, hardworking people, so watching citizens—especially in rural communities—waiting in long lines for food, water, and basic supplies was heartbreaking. The suffering and destruction left her “broken into a million pieces.”

Despite the devastation, Spice has taken a leading role in relief efforts. Through her foundation, she has been providing clothing, food, care packages, and essential items to affected families. She also rented 10 trucks filled with building supplies to help rebuild dozens of damaged homes in the hardest-hit areas.

After the interview, Spice shared the video on her social media accounts, thanking CNN for giving her the opportunity to shed light on Jamaica’s crisis and encourage international support. She closed with the foundation’s mission:

“The Grace Hamilton Foundation is building back Jamaica one house at a time.”

Her emotional interview and continued humanitarian work have earned widespread praise, drawing global attention to the recovery efforts and showcasing her deep love and dedication to her homeland during one of its toughest periods.
